New car registrations rise again

NEW CAR registrations are on the rise for the fifth month in a row, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
The total of 143,844 units for July was the highest all year and and a 9.3% rise on July 2011. The increase reflects the latest raft of fuel-efficient cars arriving on the market, says the Society.
Registrations of alternatively-fuelled cars were up 45.9% in the month as well, indicating a consumer desire for lower running costs.
As a result of the positive figures the SMMT has revised its 2012 predictions for total registrations for the year up to 1.97 million.
Paul Everitt, SMMT Chief Executive said: "New car registrations rose 9.3% in July, continuing the upward trend seen during recent months. SMMT’s full year forecast is for 1.97 million cars to be registered during 2012 suggesting a slight slowing of demand in the second half of the year.”
"International economic stability remains a concern for vehicle manufacturers and the UK market, but intense competition and new fuel-efficient products are creating great opportunities for motorists."
These were the best-selling models in July 2012:
1. Ford Fiesta
2. Vauxhall Corsa
3. Vauxhall Astra
4. Ford Focus
5. Volkswagen Golf
6. Nissan Qashqai
7. Mercedes-Benz C-Class
8. Volkswagen Polo
9. Audi A3
10. Vauxhall Insignia
